In most parts of the country, the Osage orange – sometimes called a hedge apple – ripens in September and hits the ground in October. And when that happens, people race to gather them. It’s neither for flavor nor for aesthetics, though, as the strange-looking fruit has a bumpy, sticky exterior and a definitive scent that’s somewhere between a citrus plant and a cedar tree.
